Physics Revision: Using Graphs and an Error Log

A physics revision session can be more productive when it starts with a specific difficulty. Graph interpretation and an error log give students concrete material to discuss with a tutor instead of simply asking to revise an entire chapter.

Read the graph before calculating

Identify the axes, units, scale and any unusual features. Describe the trend in words. Distinguish the value at a point from a gradient or an area, and use only the interpretation that applies to the physical situation being studied.

Connect the graph to the concept

Ask what the graph says about the relationship between quantities. Use a diagram or a familiar example where helpful. Avoid memorising a graph shape without understanding what the variables mean. The tutor can test understanding by changing the context or asking for a prediction.

Record errors with their causes

Keep a short table containing the topic, the first incorrect step and the correction. Causes might include a unit conversion, a misread axis, an equation used outside its conditions or an incomplete explanation. Add a similar question to revisit after a gap.

Practise explanations as well as numbers

Write concise answers that address the instruction and use relevant physics ideas. Ask the tutor to point out missing links in the reasoning. Choose questions matching the current syllabus, and review unresolved topics before increasing timed practice. A balanced plan includes independent work and rest.
